용두암은 제주도에서 매우 잘 알려져 있는 관광지로 해안가에 위치하고 있습니다. 용두암 부근은 높은 절벽으로 이루어져 있고 그 곳으로는 용암이 흘렀을 것으로 추측됩니다. 용두암을 옆에서 보면 용머리 모양을 하고 있어 용두암이라고 불리고 있습니다. 용두암을 높은 곳에서 내려다 보면 얇게 민 판을 아주 길게 세워놓은 것 같은 모양을 하고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있습니다. 또한 용두암을 이루고있는 암석들의 표면을 살펴보면 주먹 크기의 둥근 돌들이 사이사이에 박혀 있는 것을 보실 수 있습니다. 이것은 아마도 용암이 흘러내릴때 생긴 클링커로서 용암이 먼 거리를 흘러 내려 오는 동안에 크기가 작아지고 모양이 마모되어진 것을 예측할 수 있습니다.
